Hard landings typically don't make smoke.  Crash landings make smoke.

It’s what happens when they approve a machine that has no emergency landing ability. Helicopters can auto-rotate. Planes have glide ability. Between a wide altitude and speed range of the ground, this thing has neither. I feel for the families.

The Osprey has an undeserved bad reputation. Yes, it had its crashes in development. But it now has a better safety record than helicopters.
